The WHY Question
We developed the Kinga platform after identifying a host of pressing issues in the boda boda sector in consultation with riders. The sector generates over KES 600 billion annually, making it the largest in the country, yet riders continue to struggle to make ends meet. They are often exploited by those in power, financial institutions, insurance firms, passengers, thugs, and others. They take the biggest risks on the road but receive the least in return. The government is constantly at odds with the sector, issuing crackdowns in an attempt to regulate it, but these have been unsuccessful.
When we asked riders why they do not comply with NTSA regulations, they cited the high cost of obtaining the required gear: one certified rider helmet, one certified passenger helmet, two reflector jackets, PSV insurance, a valid driver's license, a good conduct certificate from the police, and a GPS tracker. This explains why many riders are not NTSA compliant and prefer to ride without the required items.
The Kinga platform levels the playing field using cutting-edge technology. All riders must first register with a SACCO of their choice using our AI face recognition KYC system. This builds trust and enables financial institutions to loan SACCOS the funds they need to procure the necessary gear for their members to become NTSA compliant. Members can arrange with their SACCOS how they will repay the loans. This way, all riders can become NTSA compliant and ride safely, making our roads much safer for all users.
The Kinga platform was built to help the government better regulate and manage the boda boda sector, mitigate crime, enhance service provision through various partnerships, and put more money in the riders' pockets. By listening to the riders, we believe we have addressed their most pressing issues.
